5,000 pairs—that’s how many pairs of customized Havaianas were made during the recently concluded Make Your Own Havaianas event which ran for only five days.
So what was so special about Make Your Own Havaianas? As the name implies, the event lets fans of the flip-flops create a pair according to their liking. According to Ms. Anne Gonzalez of Havaianas, “MYOH is the perfect opportunity for Havaianas fans to create flip-flops that are uniquely their own but still carry the same signature comfort and style of Havaianas.” The event, dubbed as the most fashionable flip-flop extravaganza, had also been held in Australia, Japan, the U.S. and, of course, Brazil.
This was how MYOH worked: people came in, looked at the 14 differently-colored straps and soles equal to 196 possibilities then decided what combination they fancied. They also picked the embellishments they wanted from a dozen varieties of pins and Swarovski crystals. After finally deciding on which look was perfect for them (which can take anywhere from 10 minutes to an hour), the slippers were then assembled by the helpful Havaianas people on the site. The flip-flops lovers then happily left with their one, or five pairs of unique Havaianas.
FLIP FLOPS FRENZY
Presented with the chance to bring home a one-of-a-kind pair of their favorite flip-flops, one would expect that fans of the ultra soft slippers to troop to the North Court of the Powerplant Mall, the event venue, to customize their Havaianas.
And troop they did. As early as an hour before the official opening, fans of all forms and shapes were piling up by the venue’s entrance. By the time MYOH began at 11 AM, there was already a long line of people eagerly waiting to make their own unique pair of the world’s favorite flip-flops. Even the people from Havaianas Philippines were surprised with the turnout. “Considering that the event opened on a Thursday, we were really surprised to see a lot of people already waiting in line. They wanted to get the first pick of the bunch so they came early-- some even snuck out of work just to get their customized pair,” shares Ms. Gonzalez.
