What makes your kids smile?

Smiles are the truest expression of happiness. To commemorate Smile Month, Havaianas, the world's favorite flip-flops, launched the "Design a Smile" campaign last October to spread cheer and share thousands of smiles with Filipino children. Havaianas created a venue for children to heal the broken smiles of other children who have cleft lip and cleft palate deformities.

A series of one-day design contests from October 16 to November 14, Havaianas "Design a Smile" gave children the chance to show their artistic talents and, at the same time, create better futures for the children of Operation Smile, a non-profit, volunteer medical organization that provides reconstructive surgery and healthcare to kids with facial deformities. Children from 5 to 12 years of age participated in the Havaianas "Design a Smile" competition to lend their creativity for a greater cause. All they had to do was come to any of the events, held in all Ayala Malls and other major malls nationwide, and design the sole of a Havaianas pair based on the theme, "What makes you smile?"

After receiving over 2,200 entries, the judges, Anne Gonzalez -Managing Director, Havaianas Philippines, Bobby Manzano - President and Executive Director, Operation Smile Philippines, Mia Fausto-Cruz - Mommy-in-Chief, Smart Parenting, Maricel Laxa- Pangilinan - Celebrity Mom/TV Personality, and Dcal Dacalos - Teacher, My Masterpiece Movement have meticulously short listed 10 finalists based on the following criteria:

1. Creativity of design: 35%
2. Fulfillment of theme: 35%
3. Matches Havaianas Brand Personality: 30%

You can do your part to help Havaianas select the winning design of the Havaianas "Design a Smile" contest.

The winning flip-flop design will be produced into an actual Havaianas pair with a percentage of the sales to be donated to Operation Smile Philippines.

Havaianas Design a Smile

Havaianas partners with Operation Smile, a non-profit, volunteer medical organization that provides reconstructive surgery and healthcare to kids with facial deformities. Together, they are sure to put smiles on children's faces with the launch of its "Design a Smile" campaign. By taking part in a flip-flop design competition, Filipino children will be given the chance to help heal the broken smiles of children who suffer from cleft lips and palates. The winning design will be the first of its kind as it will be produced and released for retail in the Philippines as part of the Havaianas collection. A percentage of the proceeds from the sales of this unique design will be donated to Operation Smile in order to help make a positive change in the lives of indigent Filipino children.

WHO CAN JOIN?

The contest is open to all Filipino citizens who are:

• Five to twelve years old
• Permanent residents of the Philippines
• Contestants MUST have consent from their parent or guardian

HOW TO JOIN?

1. Submission of Entries
2. Contestants must attend any of the Design a Smile events to enter the contest. Event dates and venues are as follows:

3. Contestants must completely fill out the registration form and official entry form at the event location. The parent or guardian present at that time must sign the consent section of the official entry form.


4. Contestants are highly encouraged to donate to Operation Smile. 100% of donations will be given to Operation Smile. The lack or amount of each contestant's donation will in no way hinder their participation in the contest or influence the judging of their entry.


5. Contestants will be provided with scratch paper, art materials and their official entry form after they have filled out the application form. Only one official entry form will be provided per contestant.


6. Contestants must design the sole of a Havaianas flip-flop using the official entry form answering the question, "What makes you smile?"


7. Contestants must provide a one sentence explanation of their design in the designated area in the official entry form.


8. Contestants may only use the art materials provided at the event. Contestants may only use five colors in their design.


9. Contestants will have thirty minutes to complete their entry.


10. Contestants may not bring in pre-existing designs. Contestants may not trace or copy other artwork. Contestants may not include trademarked or copyrighted icons in their design, such as known cartoon characters or other brand names.


11. Contestants must submit their official entry form into the official contest drop box in the presence of an official contest organizer after thirty minutes or they will be disqualified.


12. The official contest drop box will be sealed at the end of each event day.


13. Contestants may only submit one (1) official entry. Should the contestant submit another entry, only their first entry will be considered valid. The contest organizers will use the control number on each official entry form to determine which form was submitted first.


14. Incomprehensible, illegible, incomplete and offensive entries may be rejected and deemed illegible at the sole discretion of the contest organizers.


15. The contest organizers reserve the right to verify the validity of entries and to disqualify any entrant who tampers with the entry process or who submits an entry that is not in accordance with these mechanics or submit copied or unoriginal designs at any time.


16. By entering this competition, contestants agree to allow the organizers to publish their entry and the design, along with the contestant's name on the Havaianas websites.


17. By entering this competition, contestants agree to allow the organizers to utilize their design and any images and any other work generated which is included in the entry. Contestants agree to allow the promoters to distribute, communicate, broadcast, modify, edit, adapt, segment and otherwise use the drawings, diagrams, images and designs submitted in the official entry form. By entering the competition, contestants acknowledge that there is no payment or consideration payable by the organizers to use of the contestant's drawings, diagrams, images and designs.


18. On November 25, 2010 at the Terry S.A. head office, a panel of judges will shortlist ten (10) entries based on the following criteria:
1. Creativity of design: 35%
2. Fulfillment of theme: 35%
3. Matches Havaianas Brand Personality: 30%


19. Winners will be announced by 5PM on December 1, 2010 at the campaign website. Winner will also be notified via their contact information (mobile, email and registered mail).


20. SMS and MMS voting
1. The ten (10) winners of Havaianas Design a Smile will be posted online at www.havaianasphilippines.com/smile/. Starting December 1, 2010m these winners will become the finalist for Havaianas Design a Smile - Part II.


2. Log on to http://www.havaianasphilippines.com/smile/ to view the finalists. The ten (10) finalists design shall be available for MMS download. Public can vote and download for the designs starting 12:00NN on December 1, 2010 to 5:00PM January 7, 2011.


3. Follow these steps to vote


1. Step 1: Register

– Text: havs[space]vote[space]design number, your name, age, email address
– Send to 2256
– Registration already counts as a vote
– First time voters must register to validate votes
– Cost: Php 2.50 / text


2. Step 2: Vote via SMS or by downloading MMS pictures

(1) To vote via SMS,

– Text: havs[space]vote[space]design number.
– Then send to 2256
– SMS votes count as 1 vote
– Cost: Php2.50 / text

(2) To vote by downloading MMS pictures,

– Text: havs[space]vote[space]MMS[design number].
– Then send to 2256
– MMS download count as 10 votes to the downloaded design
– Cost: Php15/ download
– Voting and downloading of MMS starts December 1, 2010 and ends on January 7, 2011.

*Proceeds of the SMS and MMS voting will be donated to Operation Smile.

21. The ten (10) finalists will be judged according to the following criteria:


1. SMS and MMS votes: 40%
2. Score from Havaianas Brazil (based on the below criteria): 60%


1. Creativity of design: 35%
2. Fulfillment of theme: 35%
3. Matches with Havaianas Brand Personality: 30%


22. The entry with the highest score wins the contest. The entries with the next two highest scores will win second and third place respectively.


23. Determination of winners will be at Terry S.A. office (2293 Chino Roces Ave. Ext., formerly Pasong Tamo Ext., Makati City) on January 12, 2011 to be witnessed by a DTI representative.


24. The contest judges and all employees of Terry S.A. Inc. and its sub-distributors and retailers, Leo Burnett, GeiserMaclang Marketing Communications Inc., Zenith OptiMedia, Creative Juice Communications Inc., and other promo partners/third party suppliers, including their relatives up to the third degree of consanguinity or affinity, are automatically disqualified from joining this contest. Persons reporting regularly to Terry S.A. Inc. and its sub-distributors and retailers, Leo Burnett, GeiserMaclang Marketing Communications Inc., Zenith OptiMedia, Creative Juice Communications Inc. under a contract or service and who, by the nature of the service they render may have a direct and personal knowledge of the promotion shall also be disqualified.


25. The organizer's decision relating to any aspect of the competition is final and binding on each person who enters with the concurrence of the DTI. No correspondence will be entered into.


26. Any costs associated with entering this competition and/or accessing the website are the contestant's responsibility.


27. Winners shall have at least sixty (60) days from notification of winner, within which to claim their prizes from the Terry S.A. Head Office at 2293 Don Chino Roces Ave, Makati City.


28. Winners must bring their birth certificate and the two (2) valid IDs from the parent or guardian who signed their official entry form as evidence of his/her identity and entry. Provincial winners can claim their prizes at the nearest Havaianas store/outlet.


29. All unclaimed prizes after the said date shall be forfeited in favor of Terry S.A., Inc. with prior approval from DTI.


30. The organizers shall not be liable for any loss or damage whatsoever which is suffered (including but not limited to indirect or consequential loss) or for personal injury which is suffered or sustained, as a result of taking any of the prizes, except for any liability which cannot be excluded by law.


31. The 20% tax for prizes exceeding P10, 000.00 shall be shouldered by the winner.


32. Prizes are not convertible to cash.

33. By entering this competition, contestants agree to allow the organizers to utilize their design and any images and any other work generated which is included in the entry. Contestants agree to allow the promoters to distribute, communicate, broadcast, modify, edit, adapt, segment and otherwise use the drawings, topdiagrams, images and designs submitted in the official entry form. By entering the competition, contestants acknowledge that there is no payment or consideration payable by the organizers to use of the contestant's drawings, diagrams, images and designs.


34. Any costs associated with claiming the prizes are the contestant's responsibility.


35. The entry with the highest total score will be featured as a limited edition print in a future Havaianas Collection, with a percentage of the sales going to Operation Smile. The design submitted by the winner may be altered or modified by the organizers for the purpose of creating a commercially acceptable design for the limited edition print. The contestant acknowledges that the limited edition print may feature part or all of the entrants design and the entrants design may be substantially modified to create the limited edition print.

What is Operation Smile?

Operation Smile is a private, not-for-profit volunteer medical services organization and worldwide children's medical charity headquartered in Norfolk, Virginia that provides reconstructive surgery and related health care to indigent children and young adults. Medical volunteers repair cleft lip, cleft palate and other childhood facial deformities while building public and private partnerships to provide training to health care professionals and improve local capacity in partner countries.

How does Operation Smile work?

Operation Smile conducts medical missions in its partner countries. Corporate sponsorships, foundations, and host local government units enable Operation Smile to mobilize volunteers, provide free reconstructive surgery and build awareness on its programs.

Why does Operation Smile focus on childhood facial deformities?

Operation Smile believes that when you create smiles, you change lives, and you heal humanity. The impact of facial deformity on a child is not merely physical. Children with cleft deformities experience complications such as malnutrition, respiratory ailments, ear infections, and psychological and sociological implications. Children with cleft deformities are often ridiculed, and often stop going to school. They grow up with neither the social nor the work skills to find gainful employment in adulthood. A cleft condition does not only impact the child, but his family as well.

In the Philippines, it is estimated that one in every 500 babies are born every year with a cleft lip, a cleft palate or both. This translates roughly to 4,004 Filipinos out of 2.064 million born every year having this deformity. The Philippine Birth Defect Registry, a joint project of the Department of Health and the US National Institute of Health's Institute of Human Genetics, reported that cleft lips and palates are among the top 12 birth defects in the country.

The congenital deformity may be corrected with a simple surgery but the cost of the procedure remains prohibitive, especially among low-income groups where the condition is most prevalent. Operation Smile can change a child's life by giving the gift of a surgery for only P15,000 per child. In as little as 45 minutes, one cleft lip surgery can change a child's life forever.

Since its inception in 1982, Operation Smile Philippines has done more than 22,900 free reconstructive surgeries to underprivileged Filipino children, while Operation Smile International volunteers have provided free reconstructive surgery to over 150,000 children and young adults around the world, and thousands of health care professionals have been trained globally.

Who gave birth to Operation Smile's advocacy on treating childhood facial deformity?

Operation Smile was founded by Dr. William P. Magee Jr., a plastic surgeon, and wife, Kathleen S. Magee, a nurse and clinical social worker, in 1982 after a medical mission in Naga City in the Philippines. Around 300 families arrived hoping to get reconstructive surgery for their children's cleft lips and palates but the medical team then could only treat 40 children. What created an impact to the couple was not the 40 children they were able to treat but the hundreds that they had to turn down. The Magees made a promise to return to treat more children.

Back home in Norfolk, Virginia, they solicited donations of surgical equipment and supplies, raised funds, and assembled a volunteer group of doctors, nurses and technicians for another medical mission to the Philippines. What started as a small volunteer group has now become a worldwide volunteer organization. The first mission in the Philippines was the inspiration behind the now globally dynamic organization that is Operation Smile.
